What is AMD?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a progressive condition that attacks central vision. People who have AMD may no longer be able to read, drive, or see the faces of their family members. The personal, societal, and economic costs of AMD can be devastating.
Did you know...
- More Canadians have AMD than have breast cancer, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s combined. The number of Canadians with AMD is comparable to the number of Canadians with Type II diabetes.
- Eighty per cent of Canadians are unaware that AMD is the leading cause of significant vision loss in Canada. And more than 75 per cent of Canadians aren’t familiar with AMD at all.
- People who smoke are twice as likely to develop AMD. People who have a family history of AMD and smoke are up to 144 times more likely to develop the disease.
